Is Inadequate Business Phone Service Blocking Small Business Expansion?

Aiming to expand your business this year? Lots of entrepreneurs are, according to the National Small Business Association’s surveys.  About a third of those surveyed said they want to expand their facilities or develop new strategic alliances, and 59 percent say they plan on growing their businesses in some way.

That’s the good news, since it could signal a more broad-based economic recovery in 2014. The bad news is that many small business owners say their expansion efforts—particularly their attempts to add new workers or new offices—are often thwarted by inflexible or inadequate business phone service.

The most common business phone service problems include the inability to add new phones without buying expensive new PBX equipment or hiring consultants, high costs and long waits for service installation or changes, and the inability of their old-style phone systems to easily add communications features such as Internet faxing, chat, online meetings or videoconferencing.

That’s why many of these entrepreneurs are abandoning traditional phone service providers and PBXs, and switching to Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) business phone service that integrates more easily with their computers, tablets and smartphones.

In addition, VoIP business phone service has a number of advantages over PBXs and old-style Grandma Bells, including:

  • Faxes and voicemails that forward to email—so you don’t miss important opportunities
  • Auto-receptionists for a professional image and better call routing
  • Virtual phone numbers, so you can appear “local” wherever you do business
  • A professional voicemail box for every employee
  • Mobile apps to support traveling or remote workers
  • Predictable, affordable monthly charges
