Why Is Summer a Great Time to Take Your Business to the Next Level?

Why is summer a great time to take your business to the next level? Well, there is never a bad time to try to improve your company, but summer offers a slew of unique opportunities. Here are four actions that you can take to improve employee engagement and boost your bottom line during the warmer months.

1. Take the time to think and reflect, check in, and plan ahead

Most people are trained to think and work based on school schedules from when they were very young. Now that it is summer, you can work with those years of training and take the time to pause and reflect. After all, everyone needs a mental break sometimes—your clients may even be away on vacation during this time of the year. The sunshine puts you in a better mood, and positive vibes enable you to create a better and more productive work environment.

Summer represents the halfway point of the year, making it the perfect time for a change of pace. Just as a teacher may take those summer days to develop the curriculum for the next year, you, too, can use the time to plan ahead. You may want to take the opportunity to conduct a full audit of your business and pivot as needed. It may also be a good time for you to sit down with your staff members individually, conduct reviews and plan out next steps for development.

2. Experiment with new products, services, displays, and promotions

Despite the success of your small business, there is always room for improvement. Thus, your team should continuously seek out new potential enhancements to try out with any extra time they may have during slower business months. Take the opportunity to test out new processes and technology, such as a project management system or database to better organize your business information.

If you own a seasonal business, such as a motel or boutique by the ocean, you can capitalize on the extra foot traffic, summer trends, and disposable income from tourists and those on vacation. Put your marketing and public relations efforts into overdrive: Conduct summer specials, have vacation-themed print advertising, and consider launching new offerings that are in high demand right now. If you have merchandise that did not sell well in other seasons, you can strategically tie them into popular summer items and promotions. Here are some examples to get you started:

  • Towels
  • Bikinis and swim trunks
  • Sunblock and insect repellent
  • Climate-appropriate apparel for all ages
  • School supplies for the coming season

  • Barbecue catering
  • Pool maintenance
  • Summer camps for kids
  • Ice cream shop
  • Jet ski/water activity equipment rental
  • Beach yoga classes
  • Surfing lessons

If you are looking to expand your team, you may want to seek out students who are home for the summer. Additionally, if your competition is on vacation, you may want to try to pick up their slack and target their customers.

3. Catch up on side projects and tasks

You do not want your employees sitting around doing nothing during the slower months. If you find that your team has ample free time, you should take advantage of it by providing internal trainings and asking your employees to perform research tasks, such as looking into new vendors that may help your business save money. Furthermore, you can take the time to help new employees adjust to your business operations. You may also want to schedule business coaching sessions to look at your strengths and weaknesses, improve your time management skills, and add more value to your bottom line.

4. Host a party or getaway for clients and employees

During the warmer months, you may want to host a party to enhance employee engagement and improve your client relationships. If scheduling is an issue, you can implement walking or picnic meetings, instead. Depending on your industry, the summer months may also be a good time of year for you to organize a company retreat.

So, why is summer a great time to take your business to the next level? While your focus should always be to scale your business every day of the year, the warmer months can serve as the perfect time for you to reevaluate what is working, have reviews with employees and clients, and launch new offerings and marketing campaigns.
